ARTIST STATEMENT 4/14/11

I work directly with acrylics on primed canvas with. no preparatory drawings. The point is to capture spontaneity and directness between he image I imagine and the image that emerges. I sometimes use a textured base and this is to allow for an organic coupling of the image and material.

My past work has been noted for it's use of color and layered structure. Often I mixed media using such materials that indicated metaphoric content such as tar, charcoal, rust , mirror and wood fragments. These are not merely surface adornments but are part of the layered structure of the painting and are selected for their inherent metaphoric qualities that allude to mutability. They have been aged and changed by natural processes.

Scale is important in the work because I want the viewer to be physically immersed in the image, and since water is often a subject treated, albeit in an abstract way, this is part of the viewing experience.
The same is true for my recent work. The subject matter refers to the universe and its destructive and creative processes so once again size is important. I wish the viewer to be swept up into the cosmic drama unfolding
.
Abstract painting is a huge category. My work is the kind of abstraction that is rooted in the natural world.
It toggles between inferred meaning / expression and references to geology, biology and astronomy. It's the poetry that comes from the unexpected juxtaposition of color and referred form that energizes and elevates the paintings.
